Our own perspective is guiding the way.

Implicit bias is "a bias or prejudice that is present but not consciously held or recognized."

- Merriam Webster

By definition, racial bias is difficult to recognize, and therefore difficult to rectify.

Yet, it is real and potentially quite corrosive or even dangerous to human interaction.

How can we discover and combat bias in our world?

Information alone has little impact on ideas and practices.

Rather than overwhelm you with information, or ask you to share your personal views and feelings with strangers, we use The Hourglass Method as a gentle scaffold to stimulate and support you in doing your own thinking,

about your own perspective.

– This is not your standard training. –

Here's how our workshop works.

First, we use video to get out of our own way.

Let's be honest, talking about racial bias can be uncomfortable. It's a charged topic, and that often has us walking into trainings with our guard up, or at the very least, nervous!

A captivating video focuses our attention outward, off of our own thoughts, feelings, or experiences.

This is not the the kind of video that tells you what you're "supposed" to think or do or say.

Instead, it's the kind of video that draws you into the nuances of human experience.

Because bias lives in the minutia of daily life.

That doesn't make it trivial.

But, it can make it hard to spot.

Then, we use

The Hourglass Method to help us notice the nuance.

The Hourglass Method uses a series of open-ended questions to structure a collaborative (not consensus-seeking) discussion about the video to consider lived experiences and a variety of perspectives.

At that point, you'll feel more ready to turn your attention inward. You'll notice your own perspectives coming to the surface naturally so that you can think and construct for yourself new ways of looking at human experience and our world.

A Powerful Pair

Our memories aren't very good at recalling new information when we're out in life. Plus, telling you what to look for and then how to respond is just not going to stick with you like a captivating video and a chance to think for yourself.

The video clip stimulates an embodied learning experience so that your insights from our discussion, using The Hourglass Method, are tied to your visual memory.

Out in your real world, the clip will pop into your mind and you'll have immediate access to your insights.

I bet you can do this right now, even with a movie you watched years ago. How quickly can you recall a scene in your mind?

It's quick. It's vivid. And you don't have to think.

You just know your perspective on it, right?

Here's what one participant shared about her workshop experience...

"This workshop has given me the chance to reflect on what I see around me, the video surprised me at first and then with the support from our facilitators I was able to take it apart and discover new ways of thinking about my own racial biases in an environment that feel inclusive and non-judgemental."

Here's what more participants shared...

"It helps me understand how each person can have a completely different perspective in the world."

"The workshop heightened my own awareness of racial biases, and that awareness spreads through my work."

"The workshop made me 'stop and think' about racial bias and what it means to be more aware of it and how it directly or indirectly affects the families we serve."
